Dialogues and Encounters in the Arctic (2020-2022) is an Interreg Nord and Lapin Liitto funded project led by the Sámi Education Institute (FIN) and involving partners from Umeå University (SE) and the University of Lapland’s (FIN). The purpose of this project was to initiate dialogue between the Arctic Indigenous peoples and researchers on challenges affecting the Arctic, the traditional economies, culture, societies, and ecosystems. The project shared and documented knowledge and information on Arctic Indigenous livelihoods, languages and culture, and subjects affecting them. Themes like food sovereignty, environmental observations, Indigenous design and innovation and storytelling were explored through a series of workshops which took place in both virtual and physical spaces, and in different educational environments with the Sámi community. Storytelling, dialogue and design methods were used as a way to engage in these topics. The overall purpose of the project was to create a pilot network-based model for research-community collaboration in the Arctic. The project outcomes were based on the findings that emerge from the workshops and by processing the dynamics of the players involved and the factors affecting Indigenous communities in the Arctic, and most specifically within the Sápmi area.

My involvement :

As part of a diverse set of collaborators, I was the project coordinator as part of the University of Lapland’s team (2020-2021).

  • In close collaboration with the project leaders at the Sámi Education Institute, I organised and led multiple workshops (online and physically) as part of the project activities.

  • I also created the project website and logo. The logo was designed for the project inspired by a map of Sápmi geographical area and specifically from a northern perspective, looking north to south, a suggestion from Janne Näkkäläjärvi at the Sámi Education Institute. The lines in movement remind us of voice vibrations, hinting to the dialogues at the core of the project.

  • I conducted part of my doctoral research fieldwork through this project.

Dialogues and Encounters in the Arctic required a lot of creativity and adaptation from collaborators as it took place entirely during the covid19 pandemic restrictions. This resulted in unexpected outcomes, notably a large quantity of video material recorded by our collaborators Arto Saijets and Marina Falevitch at the Sámi Education Institute.

See the project website’s blog section. Below, you can see a few pictures from project activities between 2020-2022.
